During in a Christmas gathering with barangay officials in Davao City, President Rodrigo Duterte has lambasted his religious critics through a spicy statement, calling them hypocrites.
Mamilyonaryo tang tanan [Look at them, they just keep on shouting, they are not doing anything. The church did not even give a single... The people have a lot of contribution, they keep on praying but the graces never came. Do not believe in religion. Do not believe. They are only good in collecting (money). If the message is true, then we give money, who here never prayed to become a millionaire? We should have all become millionaires]," he said on Tuesday, and even liken his religious critics as hypocrites as the United States.
I mean, there is God. But be careful about religion. Kwarta kwarta lang na. Kagwapo ug bisti, mga ginaana na mga gold [Like the others. They were just out for a massage, they went around, but they were hit by an explosion. Where is the God and the graces they are talking about? I mean, there is God. But be careful about religion. It's all about the money. They have nice vestments, and they raise a gold chalice]," he added as he raised his glass as if it was a chalice which made some members laughed.
"Wala ako mag-atake but the hypocrisy of it all. Pareho lang na ug America [I am not attacking but the hypocrisy of it all. They are just like America]," Duterte added.
This was not the first time that Duterte criticized his religious critics, which include leaders of the Catholic Church.
In September, he said to his religious critics not to use God in arguing against him.
