NPA Commander, 121 Others Surrenders in Bukidnon
A high-ranking commander of the New People’s Army decided to lay down his gun in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon on Saturday.
Ka Rodolfo Peligro, also known as Ka Puroy, contacted members of 21st Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army on Saturday and told the government he was ready to surrender.
Ka Puroy, together with 212 strong members of the rebel group is scheduled to meet Army Chief GEN Eduardo M. Año on Tuesday, and President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday.
The surrender of Ka Puroy is the first mass return of NPA since Pres. Duterte took office last July.
A native of Pagadian City, Peligro joined CPP-NPA on 1992 and became a field commander in 2001.
The group’s decision is a big blow to the CPP-NPA, which recently called “terrorist group” by Duterte.
Peligro, during a media briefing on Saturday said that the CPP-NPA conducted a massive recruitment during the cease fire, validating Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana’s statement earlier.
Bukidnon is home to one of the strongest NPA camps, and the surrender of Ka Puroy’s group will surely destabilize the NPA operation in the area. /Jowell Lobaton/
